James Conway

James Conway

The Trust was privileged to be involved in the contruction of the monument in honor of Royal Marine James Conway at Mount Tabor in Stockport.

James Conway took part in one of the most daring commando raids of World War Two, where he was one of the 12 men who paddled more than 80 miles in canoes up the Gironde to plant limpet mines on shipping in the German occupied French city of Bordeaux in 1942.

Only two men survived the raid; James was captured and executed whilst making his escape over the border into neutral Spain. These brave men ultimately became known as the ‘Cockleshell Heroes’.

Stockport MBC approached the Trust to ask for assistance in erecting poppies around the borough as part of their remembrance day tributes.

Mikey Phillips and Tony Bardsley volunteered to spent their weekend putting up 250 poppies in and around the town centre.

Emergency Services Monument, Blackpool

Emergency Services Monument, Blackpool

The George Cox Foundation was approached by Solicitor Dana Gledhill to help with the construction of this prestigious monument. More than £30,000 was raised from events including the annual Blue Light Ball to pay for the construction and our contribution was the construction of the foundations.

The memorial which honours all four emergency services features four six foot high figures representing the police, fire brigade, ambulance service and coastguard. The figures of the monument face inland and are illuminated, they are visible 24 hours a day from people on the trams, pavement or road. A plaque is also laid on the platform dedicated to the three officers, Colin Morrison, Gordon Connolly and Angela Bradley who drowned in 1983 whilst bravely trying to save a holiday maker. It will also serve as a reminder of the daily perils faced by all 999 workers.
